I found FreeFileSync to be completely reliable once I learned how to use it. I used to use Teracopy with XP and it worked great but it would slow down and, often, crash when I used it in Win 7. Once you learn how to set it up and use it, it's fast and easy to use, either using presets for repeat operations (such as updating backups) or having a preset set up to use for single or multiple file transfers. By adding it, that allowed the copy/move to work. I had a problem copying where it would only create a zero byte file and then I would have to go into safe mode to delete it. There is a bit of a learning curve to use it but any other sophisticated program will have a learning curve. Be sure to go in and add Teracopy.exe to the allowed applications in the Active Protection tab. I use FreeFileSync mostly for backups but it also works just fine for file copying, either single files at a time or massive numbers of files. I also use it, but for synchronization of installation files on the computer and flash stick. Rather, it aims at directory synchronization, which is in the name of the program. Windows own file copy functionality is limited. The program may replace the default Windows file copy dialog with an advanced version. Our first review of TeraCopy dates back to 2007. To copy or move files using FastCopy you have to open the program and select the source and destination folders. Although my test doesn’t say so, it is invariably faster than Windows default. According to the developers, FastCopy can achieve Reading/Writing performance that is close to device limit.
If both source and destination are on the same disk drive reading is processed until the buffer is filled, and then writing is started and processed in bulk.īecause Reading/Writing are processed with no operating system cache, other applications tends to remain unaffected. If both are on different disk drives, reading and writing are processed respectively in parallel by separate threads.
